Marisa Bender, a graduate of South Hagerstown High School, is preparing to finish her Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and will then enter graduate school to study Forensic Science. Dr. Shirish Shah visited the Chemistry Department and donated a Merck Index to the American Chemical Society Student Affiliates Club. This reference source was placed in the Organic Lab for student use. Special thanks to both Dr. Shah and the Maryland Section of ACS!

Dr. Tracey Mason, faculty advisor for the ACS Student Affiliates Club, poses in front of the atomic absorption (AA) spectrometer. She is showing the students how to use the instrument to test water samples for lead and calcium. The group hopes to use this expertise to test water for area homes and businesses.

One hundred students, faculty and staff enjoyed the annual Chemistry Magic Show. Students performed magic tricks to impress the audience and then explained why they worked using chemical principles they had learned in classes. Pizza, laughs, singing and chemistry- a good time was had by all!

Students and faculty wore their newly designed SU ACS club t-shirts in honor of National Chemistry Week. The shirt was designed by students to reflect this year’s theme of “Chemistry: It’s Elemental.”
