Q: Why did you decide to participate in the summer research program?
A: I previously completed independent lab research for credit during two semesters. I enjoyed working independently and wanted to continue doing research for the chemistry department. I also needed a payid position to help pay for school.

Students in the Class of 2013 participated in Orientation 2009! Twenty Chemistry freshmen were warmly welcomed to campus and participated in a variety of activities. The Chemistry Department wishes good luck to Amanda Carr ’09 as she starts her new position at United Therapeutics in Silver Spring, Maryland. Mandi is starting as a Quality Control Chemist at this biotechnology company, which focuses on the development and commercialization of unique products for patients with chronic and life-threatening cardiovascular, cancer and infectious diseases.

Marisa Bender and Julia Wikoff retrieve CHO cells from a liquid nitrogen storage tank. This tank is designed to keep the stem cells extremely cold to ensure the cells stay alive and healthy. Marisa and Julia use the stem cells for their research under Dr. Tracey Mason.

Dr. Tracey Mason takes some time away from her summer research to fill the NMR with liquid nitrogen. The liquid nitrogen keeps the NMR magnet at extremely cold temperatures to ensure proper functioning. The Chemistry and Physical Science department is very excited to have the NMR up and running!
