Last week, Nick Zink, Chemistry alum ’02, successfully defended his thesis and received his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). Students interested in chemistry came together to start the Stevenson University American Chemical Society Student Affiliates Club. Over a pizza lunch with several chemistry faculty members, students planned future activities, laughed and had a good time. Advertising is underway to encourage more chemistry majors to join in and add to the chemistry!

Rachel Buchanan, a freshman Chemistry major, analyzes the absorbance of visible light on numerous samples using a NovaSpec Plus Spectrophotometer. Spectrometry is a technique used to assess the concentration or amount of a given species. It is often used in physical and analytical chemistry for the identification of substances through the spectrum emitted from or absorbed by them.
